The active whitening ingredient (either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) in the teeth whitening gel breaks down any molecules that cause discolouration. Oxygen molecules from the whitening gel react with the discoloured molecules in your teeth, breaking the bonds that hold them together. This process lighten the entire tooth but does not alter the structure of the tooth. Your enamel, dentine and any fillings, crowns or veneers are not affected or harmed by the teeth whitening gel.
