Seven Reasons Why Your Teeth Are Yellow
Every day life leaves us with dull, stained teeth.
Foods and Drinks
Acidic foods can erode the enamel of your teeth, which might expose theyellow colour of your dentin.
Coffee
The enamel of your teeth contains microscopic pits and ridges that can hold particles of food and drink.
Pigments from dark-coloured drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine can become embedded in those cracks and ridges and cause permanent, yellowing stains on your teeth.
Smoking
The nicotine and tar in tobacco can make your teeth yellow in a very short period of time
Medications
Certain antibiotics, for example, tetracycline and doxycycline, are known to discolour teeth when given to children younger than 8 years because their teeth are still developing.
Mouthwash
Certain antibiotics, for example, tetracycline and doxycycline, are known to discolour teeth when given to children younger than 8 years because their teeth are still developing.
Age
As you get older, the outer layer of enamel on your teeth gets worn away, revealing the natural yellow colour of dentin.
Trauma
If you had trauma that affected a tooth when you were a young child, you may have damaged your developing permanent tooth.
Trauma to a permanent tooth can cause internal bleeding or cause the nerve to die, which will cause the tooth to discolour.
At What Age Should I Whiten My Teeth?
Teeth whitening for under-18s is only legal in exceptional circumstances.
You can whiten your teeth at any age. We have had patients in their sixties and seventies who have had teeth whitening and have loved the result.
Can I Whiten My Teeth?
If you have healthy teeth and gums and would like a brighter smile, you can consider teeth whitening. If your teeth have yellow tones, you will be pleased with the result.
When is Teeth Whitening not Suitable?
Teeth whitening is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You have sensitive teeth.
If you have sensitive teeth and gums, receding gums, and/or defective restorations, you should consult with your dentist to discuss whether teeth whitening will be appropriate for you.
You have Fillings, Crowns, and Other Restorations.
Tooth-coloured fillings, crowns, veneers, and bridges do not whiten. You will need to replace your old fillings after having your teeth whitened. You will have to wait at least 2-4 weeks after teeth whitening to replace restorations or crowns.
How White will My Teeth Be?
If you expect your teeth to be a new "blinding white," you may be disappointed with the results. After teeth whitening, you can expect your teeth to be a slightly whiter color than the whites of your eyes. We expect your teeth to be 2 to 6 shades brighter after teeth whitening.
Does Teeth Whitening Ruin the Enamel on Your Teeth?
Prolonged exposure to bleaching agents can cause tooth enamel damage, which is why consulting your dentist is essential before whitening your teeth.
Does Teeth Whitening Cause Sensitivity?
The most common side effect of teeth whitening is sensitivity afterwards; however, this is usually mild, and the professional treatment isn't painful at all. With the correct after-care, this sensitivity can be minimised and controlled.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
The active whitening ingredient (either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) in the teeth whitening gel breaks down any molecules that cause discolouration. Oxygen molecules from the whitening gel react with the discoloured molecules in your teeth, breaking the bonds that hold them together. This process lightens the entire tooth but does not alter the structure of the tooth. Your enamel, dentine, and any fillings, crowns, or veneers are not affected or harmed by the teeth whitening gel.
How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?
Teeth whitening results are very stable. Topping up your teeth whitening is easy, safe, and can be done periodically.
Will Teeth Whitening Cause Tooth Sensitivity?
Opalescence teeth whitening gel contains:
Potassium nitrate has been shown to help reduce sensitivity
Fluoride is shown to help reduce cavities and strengthen enamel.
Water to prevent dehydration and shade relapse
Opalescence is a sticky, viscous gel that won't migrate to your gums.
Is Teeth Whitening Kind to My Teeth?
Independent clinical studies have confirmed that Fluoride and Potassium Nitrate help reduce cavities and minimise sensitivity.
