One in four of us dreads a visit to the dentist, but there are ways to overcome your fear.nervous of dentist newbury

The good news is that more and more dentists understand their patients’ fears. With a combination of kindness and gentleness they can do a lot to make dental treatment stress free.

Talking to nervous patients they tell me that their fear stems from their visits as a child to their school dentist. They describe walking down the gravel path, knocking on the door and still 30 years later feel the fear they had at that time.

Being afraid of the dentist means different things to different people.

What do you fear when visiting the dentist?

  1. The sound of the drill is a big cause of anxiety for you.

Maybe you will feel happier listening to music with earphones that block out the noise of the drill.

2. I have a needle phobia.

Some people find it easier if they keep their eyes closed while the dentist administer the injection.

Your dentists will chat to you in order to distract you and keep the syringe out of sight.

Some people find Bach Flower Remedies useful (especially “rescue remedy”). These are available without prescription in pharmacies and health stores.

  1. Fear of gagging
  • Remember to  breathe through your nose

  • Try using a throat spray with numbing action, such as over-the-counter Vicks Ultra Chloraseptic Throat Spray. Dosage: 2 or 3 sprays right before treatment should last about an hour. This works really well for lots of people.
  1. Fear of pain

Dentistry is not painful if you’re properly numbed up. Agree with your dentist that you will raise your hand when you can feel any pain.

  1. Embarrassed about the state of your teeth

Embarrassment is perhaps the most common concern voiced by people who haven’t been to a dentist in a very long time. Dentistry has evolved into an industry which supplies a service to the potential customer – you! At 20/20 Dental Practice we are here to help not to judge.

The great news is that dental techniques have improved so much over the last few years that modern dental treatment can now be completely painless. The general attitude in a dental surgery is to be more relaxed and hopefully making you more relaxed at the same time!
